CPS Behavioral Supports for Parents and Caregivers During School Closures CPS Presentation Slides 4/15/2020: english__behavior_supports_for_parents___caregivers_during_school_closures.pdf
Executive FunctioningWhen we hosted the workshop, we didn't realize how quickly our lives would change. We reached out to the Rush Neurobehavioral Center for tips on how to promote learning at home.
Home learning tips from Rush Neurobehavioral Center: 1. Help or have them manage their materials (depending on students age) by having a designated area for study/work. This way you can have everything they may need, pens, paper, books, folders, etc. at hand. This will prevent them from constantly jumping up to search for a needed item and possibly getting distracted by that interruption. 2. A study plan in which the amount of time they are going to be working and has a clear beginning and end, and frequent short breaks built in to avoid fatigue and maintain focus. 3. The home setting is typically a bit more challenging than the school setting. In school they have the advantage of group motivation, teacher attention and feedback and fewer distractions. 4. Finally, if you feel the homework is taking too long, you may want to reach out to the school and ask for advice. Perhaps (and I'm betting this is true) you are not the only parent facing these obstacles at this time and the school may consider decreasing the load a bit.
